Mission

The Collective Intelligence Lab at the University of Connecticut is composed of a group of researchers, educators, artists, designers, and technologists who are exploring alternative models of AI from the perspective of techno-cultural diversity and collectivism. They develop methods to critically examine computational approaches to AI and creativity. They rely on experimental and multidisciplinary research methods such as simulation research, participatory research, and artistic interventions, using multiplayer open-world video game as both a cultural and technical platform to create an alternative model of artificial intelligence rooted in collectivism, instead of conventional approach in AI that is primarily inspired by a singular human brain structure.

Goals

The future of technology is swiftly moving towards the amalgamation of the digital and physical realms. The vision of this project is to establish a cutting-edge research lab, focused on the exploration, innovation, and advancement of the virtual reality and Artificial Intelligence (AI). The lab will not only aim to create novel applications and solutions but also address the social, and ethical dimensions arising from these technologies. The lab will produce interdisciplinary research and public engagement on the social implications of artificial intelligence, such as:

  • Understand and measure the effects of AI in society. To investigate and design frameworks that ensure the ethical use of Metaverse and AI, safeguarding user privacy and creative expression.
  • Shape standards and practices that inform just and inclusive AI deployment. To create advanced algorithms, tools, and applications that seamlessly blend the physical and virtual world, ensuring a heightened user experience and enhanced efficiencies.
  • Bridge the gap between theory and practice: To provide real-world solutions to theoretical problems, making the metaverse and AI more accessible, practical, and beneficial for all.
  • Help shape a field focused on these issues.
